Transfer rumors linking Morgan Rogers to Arsenal have sparked debate, with former Aston Villa striker Tony Cascarino voicing his dissatisfaction over the situation. Despite acknowledging that high-profile players have historically changed clubs, Cascarino finds the current circumstances surrounding Rogers' potential move unusual.

At Villa Park, the club's ambitious ownership under billionaire backers from V Sports is ready to invest in new players. However, head coach Unai Emery faces limitations in the transfer market due to the need to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which require the club to balance its finances through player sales.

Villa has already seen key departures as part of efforts to maintain financial compliance, yet the team has remained competitive both domestically and in European competitions. The club celebrated Europa League success in the 2025-26 season, ending a 30-year wait for a major trophy, and secured Champions League qualification with a fourth-place finish.

Among the players linked to a potential transfer is Morgan Rogers, a West Midlands native and a pivotal figure for Villa. The 23-year-old has scored 14 goals in each of the past two seasons and is currently representing England at the World Cup. Arsenal's interest in Rogers reportedly comes with a £130 million ($172 million) valuation, a price Villa is unwilling to accept without resistance.

Speaking on behalf of Tonybet’s World Cup Card Collection campaign, Cascarino told GOAL that while he supports Villa, he feels the club is constrained by football's financial regulations. He highlighted the disparity between clubs like Arsenal, who generated around £770 million last year, and others restricted by spending limits.

Cascarino said, “Villa can clearly compete. But if they're only in a position to go, ‘well, we have to sell them to Arsenal now to do our own business’, I find that a bit of a weird place for football. I don't know how we really got there. It feels the most uneven ground now in football where, like Arsenal last year generated I think 770 million, which enables them to be very aggressive.”

He added, “Big players have always moved. They've always moved just generally in football. I did a piece in the paper at the start of the week and was talking about Elliot Anderson going to City. I just said like in 1979, Steve Daley went for 1.4 million from Wolves to Man City. He lasted two years and went to Seattle Sounders after. Obviously I don't think that's going to happen to Elliot Anderson, but these big moves, of course Arsenal would want to take a quality player like Morgan Rodgers. I'm just a bit amazed because I want Villa to be competitive as well.”

Regarding Rogers' contract situation, Villa have not indicated any intention to sell the player immediately. The club’s asking price has reportedly led Arsenal to consider other options, as the Gunners question whether a British record transfer fee would represent good value.

Rogers is currently under contract with Villa until 2031. While there may be a future point when the club decides to sell him, perhaps as he seeks new challenges, no such decision is expected to be made during the 2026 season.
