German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt has dismissed Spanish head coach Albert Riera with immediate effect, just three and a half months after his appointment, following a 2-2 draw against Stuttgart that ended the club's hopes of European qualification.
Eintracht Frankfurt announced the immediate dismissal of Spanish head coach Albert Riera on Sunday, ending his tenure after only three and a half months at the helm. The decision came one day after the club's 2-2 draw with Stuttgart in the final matchday of the season, a result that sealed Frankfurt's failure to secure a spot in European competitions for the upcoming campaign.
The draw marked the first time since the 2020/2021 season that Frankfurt has missed out on continental football. Riera took over the team in February, and during his leadership, the side recorded four wins, five draws, and five losses, averaging 1.21 points per match. Eintracht Frankfurt finished the 2025/2026 Bundesliga season in eighth place.
However, the dismissal appears to have been driven not solely by on-field results but also by Riera's occasionally inflammatory remarks and tense relationships with certain players. In April, the coach described the squad he inherited at the start of February as "the worst team in Europe" from a defensive standpoint.
Among Riera's more contentious decisions was benching Mario Götze—the scorer of Germany's winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final—before the club had officially announced a contract extension with the midfielder.
Sporting director Markus Krösche commented on the departure, stating: "After intensive discussions, we together reached a decision to end our collaboration." He added: "Following a frank and transparent analysis of the sporting development, we came to the conviction that we want to implement a different approach in the coming season."
Riera, in a statement released by the club, said: "The club and I have mutually agreed to end our collaboration. As a head coach, I take responsibility for the results, and during this period, I placed my full focus on developing the team and achieving success. I felt it was my duty to protect the club and the players, and I would do the same at any time."
