Majority of Football Fans Opt to Watch World Cup at Home Over Pubs
Survey reveals 58% of British football supporters plan to watch the World Cup matches from their sofas, citing issues with pub environments. Pub owners respond with new initiatives to attract fans during the tournament.

According to a recent poll by John Lewis, 58% of British football fans intend to watch most World Cup matches from home rather than visiting pubs. This preference is attributed to factors such as obstructed views caused by groups of fans, noisy crowds, and expensive drinks at pubs.
The survey also found that over half of the respondents consider their own sofa the best place to watch England’s games during the tournament. Nearly 80% reported missing important moments while viewing football in pubs, with complaints including loud patrons drowning out commentary and long queues at the bar.
In response, pub owners are encouraging fans to return to local establishments. The British Beer and Pub Association has released guidance aimed at helping pubs create a better viewing experience throughout the World Cup. Emma McClarkin, the association’s chief executive, stated: “The pub has and always will be the home of live sport, and there is no better place to enjoy watching a game of football than at your local with friends and other fans.”
Many pubs are counting on increased patronage during the World Cup to counteract ongoing challenges, including record numbers of closures linked to the cost of living crisis. The government has confirmed that some venues will be permitted to remain open until 2am for knockout stage matches.
The John Lewis survey also highlighted the superstitious nature of football fans, with 20% adhering to rituals such as wearing lucky shirts or sitting in the same spot for kick-off. In a lighthearted development, retail company John Lewis has “signed” Boston United striker Lenell John-Lewis, who is known for the terrace chant “his name is a shop.” Lenell commented: “It feels surreal to have heard this chant my whole career and now be signed by the actual John Lewis.”
