An official Premier League statement confirmed the referee's decision to issue a yellow card to Kai Havertz during Arsenal's match against Burnley, despite criticism from former players Neville and Carragher who argued for a red card.
Kai Havertz's challenge on Burnley's Szymon Ogbonna during Monday's Premier League clash sparked heated debate, with many insisting the Arsenal midfielder deserved a red card.
The incident occurred as Ogbonna advanced with the ball through midfield. Havertz charged in but missed the ball, instead catching Ogbonna on the back of his calf with the sole of his boot.
Referee Paul Tierney issued a yellow card to Havertz, a decision upheld after review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. Burnley players protested strongly against the ruling.
The Premier League released an official statement confirming the referee's judgment: "The decision to show Havertz a yellow card was verified and upheld by the VAR, as the challenge was deemed not serious."
On Sky Sports, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville expressed his disagreement, stating,
"I don't like it. I actually think it's a red card. It's a dreadful challenge, and frankly, harsh from Havertz."
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher shared Neville's view, commenting,
"He's very lucky. I think the fact the referee had a clear view and gave a yellow card makes it difficult for VAR to overturn that."
Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory over Burnley thanks to Havertz's goal, extending their lead atop the Premier League table to 82 points. They await Manchester City's result against Bournemouth on Tuesday to confirm their first league title since 2004.
