Roy Keane, former Manchester United captain, strongly criticized Bruno Fernandes for prioritizing individual records over team success after Fernandes equaled the Premier League assist record with 20 assists in a season.

Roy Keane, the former captain of Manchester United, launched a sharp critique against Bruno Fernandes, targeting the Portuguese midfielder’s mindset and approach as he pursued the Premier League record for most assists in a single season.
Fernandes recently provided the assist for Bryan Mbeumo’s goal during Manchester United’s narrow 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday. This assist tied the all-time Premier League record of 20 assists in one season, a mark previously held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Fernandes now has the chance to break the record in the upcoming match against Brighton.
Despite the milestone, Keane expressed frustration over Fernandes’ behavior during the game. With the outcome still uncertain until the final whistle, Fernandes repeatedly opted to pass rather than take direct shots on goal. Keane viewed this as a preference for personal statistics over the team’s best interests.
Speaking on the program "The Overlap," Keane stated bluntly, “When you’re the captain of a big club and expected to lead the team forward, you shouldn’t get caught up in your individual role chasing assists.”
He continued, “What I heard at United over the weekend made me furious. The conversation revolved entirely around his assists. Everyone, including the players, was talking about it as if the whole match was played just for Bruno’s personal numbers.”
Keane also condemned Fernandes’ post-match comments, where the midfielder admitted, “In some moments, maybe I should have taken a shot... but I chose to pass.” Keane responded, “How can a captain’s mindset focus on a personal record rather than winning the game?”
When Gary Neville attempted to defend Fernandes by recalling that he rejected lucrative offers to leave Old Trafford out of loyalty and a desire to lead the club to trophies, Keane dismissed this, saying, “He won’t win trophies with such a weak team mentality. The team concedes two goals, and everyone is thrilled just because he matched the assist record! It’s astonishing... it’s like a circus act.”
Keane’s criticism extended to Fernandes’ reactions when teammates missed chances he created. He emphasized that a captain’s role is to support the team, not lament personal statistics.
Concluding his remarks, Keane said, “Bruno passes the ball, the player misses, and what does Bruno do? He falls to the ground lamenting! Why does he fall? He’s upset about himself and his numbers, not the team. There’s a striker going through a rough patch missing chances, and instead of backing him, Bruno only thinks about his own glory.”
