JD Vance Highlights Wife Usha’s $8.75 Maternity Dress Purchase Amid Criticism
JD Vance praised his wife Usha for purchasing a $50 maternity dress at a discounted price of $8.75, responding to online criticism of the outfit.

JD Vance turned the discussion surrounding his wife Usha Vance’s maternity dress into a humorous commentary on budgeting after her purchase receipt circulated widely. The vice president commended the second lady for acquiring a $50 Old Navy dress for just $8.75. This particular maxi dress had previously attracted criticism following a style article analyzing the portrayal of pregnancy in politics. Usha replied with sarcasm, sharing evidence of the discount and receiving supportive comments from users who described the coral dress as both attractive and relatable.

According to a post by Usha Vance on X (formerly Twitter), the second lady addressed the ongoing debate about her dress. She remarked, “Now that we know the political significance” of her $8.75 coral maternity dress, she awaited further analysis. She added a sarcastic response referencing her “elastic-waistband pants and compression socks.” The post included a link to her podcast “Storytime with the Second Lady,” where she wore the fitted Old Navy maternity dress during a Father’s Day episode.
On June 26, JD Vance shared the receipt in his own post, stating, “She bought a $50 dress for $8.75.” He followed with, “America: meet your next director of the federal budget!” The receipt identified the item as “The Occasion by Old Navy Maternity Asymmetrical Shoulder Maxi Dress,” listing an original price of $49.99. The sale price was $12.49, with additional promotions reducing the final amount to $8.75. USA Today noted that the dress was no longer available for purchase online.
The discussion originated after USA Today reported on the criticism directed at the maternity dress. The article mentioned that New York Times critic Vanessa Friedman had examined the “political significance” of public images of pregnancy. A spokesperson for The Times later told USA Today that the article provided “fair and illuminating analysis.” The backlash followed a fashion critique that framed Usha’s outfit as part of a broader political narrative.
The analysis compared her public appearances to those of pregnant women in the Trump administration, suggesting these appearances conveyed messages about family and motherhood. Despite this, numerous online responses supported Usha. One user on X commented, “The best part is that the dress looks beautiful, and she looks great in it.”
Usha and JD Vance are expecting their fourth child, a boy, who is due in July.
