FIFA Fines U.S. Forward Balogun $40,000 After World Cup Red Card
FIFA has imposed a $40,000 fine on U.S. forward Folarin Balogun following his red card in the 2026 World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has levied a $40,000 fine on Folarin Balogun, the forward for the United States national team, following his sending off during the 2026 World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Journalist Rob Harris reported on the social media platform X that FIFA will fine Balogun $40,000, with the U.S. Soccer Federation responsible for paying half of the amount, totaling $20,000.
Balogun received a direct red card in the round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina after a challenge on defender Tarik Moharimovic. This initially resulted in a one-match suspension. However, FIFA's disciplinary committee decided to suspend the enforcement of the ban for one year under Article 27 of the disciplinary code, allowing Balogun to participate in the round of 16 match against Belgium.
The decision to suspend the suspension sparked widespread debate, especially after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had requested FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the player's suspension, citing Balogun as a key member of the U.S. team.
Balogun started in the match against Belgium but was unable to prevent the United States from being eliminated after a 4-1 defeat in the round of 16.
FIFA clarified that the financial penalty was part of disciplinary measures against both the player and the U.S. Soccer Federation. The one-year probation period remains in effect, and if a similar violation occurs during this time, the suspension penalty may be reinstated.
