EU Imposes Sanctions on Iranian Revolutionary Guard Unit Over Strait of Hormuz Navigation Threats
The European Union has sanctioned an Iranian Revolutionary Guard naval unit and two individuals for threatening maritime freedom in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route.

The European Union announced new sanctions targeting a unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and two Iranian nationals, accusing them of threatening maritime navigation freedom in the Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of the world's oil supplies pass.
According to an EU statement, the sanctions apply to the Hormozgan naval command of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy, as well as to Mohammad Akbarzadeh and Hamid Hosseini.
This marks the first instance in which the European Union has employed its new powers to penalize Iran in response to restrictions imposed on maritime traffic in the strategically important strait.
The Revolutionary Guard recently declared it targeted two airbases in Israel.
The statement identifies Mohammad Akbarzadeh as the deputy commander for political affairs in the Revolutionary Guard Navy, while Hamid Hosseini represents the Iranian Association of Oil, Gas, and Petrochemical Exporters.
The EU's sanctions come amid rising tensions concerning navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor for global energy transport due to its essential role in oil exports worldwide.
