Heavy Bill and Exhausted Crews: How Much Did the U.S. Maritime Blockade on Iran Cost?

A Bloomberg analysis revealed that the U.S. naval operation to impose a blockade on Iran has come at a high financial cost and led to the exhaustion of military crews.

The report stated that while President Donald Trump seeks to force Iran into submission, the maritime blockade has become his preferred tool; however, this operation poses a significant challenge to U.S. military capabilities, draining personnel and weakening Washington’s position in other global regions.

Marines aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln—which recently docked at a Thai port for the first time in nine months—reported technical failures and a sharp decline in morale. Some mentioned the existence of a black market for personal hygiene supplies, as well as a 40-day internet outage isolating them from their families.

The United States has deployed four aircraft carriers in response to tensions with Iran.

The elite 82nd Airborne Division, trained for rapid crisis response anywhere in the world, is now completing a 12-month deployment in the Middle East without engaging in any combat operations, according to a source familiar with the matter.

To date, at least 28 Navy vessels have participated in the latest blockade operations—which began on July 14—resulting in operational costs exceeding $2 billion.

The report added that since the naval buildup began in January, these costs have surpassed $7.1 billion, according to a Bloomberg Economics analysis of related maritime operations; note that this figure does not include all U.S. assets used to escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

The current fleet enforcing the blockade on Iranian trade comprises around 22 ships, tasked with intercepting and rerouting any vessel linked to Iran attempting to transit the strait.

In addition to daily costs nearing $32.5 million, this blockade represents over 30% of the total U.S. Navy warships, with some of these vessels spending time at sea comparable to the duration spent by the USS Lincoln.
