Rebels in Papua Kill American Pilot and Burn His Plane
Rebels in Indonesia's Papua region shot dead an American pilot and set fire to his civilian aircraft, signaling a warning to the US and Indonesian governments.

In Papua, a region in Indonesia's far east experiencing ongoing unrest, rebels shot and killed an American pilot on Thursday and burned his civilian plane. A spokesperson for a local separatist group described the incident as a "message" directed at both the United States and Indonesian governments.
The western part of Papua, rich in resources, has long faced a modest separatist insurgency seeking independence. However, rebel attacks have grown deadlier and more frequent as the insurgents have acquired better weaponry, according to Reuters.
Sepi Sambom, the spokesperson for the West Papua National Liberation Army, an armed separatist group, stated that the rebels fired on American pilot Nicholas F. Jocelyn and set his plane ablaze after it landed in Yahukimo, located in Papua's highlands.
He added that the aircraft had been "frequently transporting Indonesian military personnel, violating warnings issued by the West Papua National Liberation Army."
Yusuf Sutijo, spokesperson for the joint operations of the Indonesian police and military in Papua, confirmed the discovery of a burnt plane piloted by an American with seven passengers aboard at a local airport in Yahukimo. However, he could not verify whether the plane had been attacked by rebels or if the pilot was killed.
Sutijo noted that all passengers were residents of Papua.
Sepi described the attack, which took place in the Palinjama area of Yahukimo, as a message to the Indonesian and American governments due to "their failure to address the root causes of the conflict in Papua between the Indonesian military and the West Papua National Liberation Army."
He warned that the rebels would initiate further attacks if Indonesia continued to allow civilian aircraft to enter the red zones controlled by the insurgents.
A video sent by the West Papua National Liberation Army showed rebels carrying rifles and axes while raising the "Morning Star" flag, a symbol of independence, as they announced the attack. The US Embassy in Jakarta has not yet responded to requests for comment.
