Samsung Renames Foldables with Confusing New Strategy
Samsung plans to rename its foldable phones, introducing the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 8, ahead of its July Unpacked event.

Samsung is altering the names of its upcoming foldable phones in a way that may perplex followers of the series. The Galaxy Z Fold 7's successor will reportedly be named the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, while the model formerly called the Z Fold 8 Wide will now be the Galaxy Z Fold 8, according to leaker Ice Universe.
This renaming strategy appears intentional rather than arbitrary. 9to5Google suggests Samsung aims to position its flagship foldable directly against Apple's anticipated foldable iPhone, which is expected to carry the "Ultra" designation upon its release in September 2026. Samsung seems to be seeking headline appeal with an "Ultra vs. Ultra" comparison.
However, Apple's foldable is predicted to have a 16:10 aspect ratio, making it more comparable to Samsung's wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 model, which will now bear the standard name. Consequently, the device designed to compete with Apple's foldable will not carry the "Ultra" label, while the Ultra-named model will have a different form factor.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will include upgrades such as a 5,000 mAh battery, 45W charging, and a 50MP ultrawide camera, as reported by SamMobile. These enhancements mark improvements over the Fold 7. Nonetheless, the Ultra model will lack features like S Pen support and the Privacy Display found on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Its charging speed will max out at 45W, below the 60W capability of the S26 Ultra. Assigning the "Ultra" name without these premium features may blur the meaning of the label within Samsung's product range.
Both foldable models are expected to be introduced at Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22 in London, although Samsung has not officially confirmed this date. Pricing details for the US and UK markets have not yet been released.
At this stage, the information remains a leak and the naming scheme could still be revised before the July event. It is evident that Samsung is attempting to preempt Apple's foldable launch with a branding approach that, on the surface, introduces as much uncertainty as clarity.
